“SWEET BISCUITS”
Sweet Biscuits is the story of the creation, development, and evolution of black towns in Oklahoma. Today 13 black towns are still in existence though there were as many as 50 at one time. Ex-slaves of the Five Civilized Tribes (freedmen), and States Negroes (ex-slaves from other states) populated these towns. They came by way of the Trail of Tears,on foot, horseback, wagon, train and waterways. Some came by choice and others by force. Regardless of how they came, their strength and determination were clear.
Sweet Biscuits will follow an African American ex-slave family from the cotton fields of North Carolina to the red dirt plains of Oklahoma. Who and what did they leave behind? Why did they choose Oklahoma? What did they bring with them? Was Oklahoma what they expected? What was daily life like for the early African American settler? Would they stay in Oklahoma? If they left Oklahoma; why? What is "happening with these towns today and how do we remember those towns that no longer exist?
