If you only had a little while to pack to leave your home, what would you take with you?  Many, many people had to leave their homes in New Orleans to escape hurricane Katrina.  Gathering her family and a few valuables, Grandma left North Tulane Street of the 9th Ward in New Orleans and headed for Oklahoma.  She packed memories in the trunk of her car, in her head and in her “gumbo pot”.  Leaving her 1970 Barracuda Convertible, white picket fence and her big dog “Roscoe” behind, she left not knowing when or if she would return.  While Grandma settles in Oklahoma City she still keeps New Orleans alive and well in her heart and in “The Gumbo Pot”.

Join Rhythmically Speaking as we share Grandma's memories and the culture of New Orleans. “Grandma, what do you have in that pot?

“Well child let me tell you……..”

"HIDDEN SOLDIER: I JUST NEED A JOB!"

The story of Cathy Williams who disguised herself and reversed her name to join the army as William Cathay.  Williams was not trying to make history. She just needed a J-O-B!  From 1866-1868, Cathy Williams was a soldier in the 38th Infantry, Company A, making her the one and only documented female  buffalo soldier to serve in the United States Army.
